ABET has recently posted a statement that outlines ABET’s position regarding the implementation of AI-assisted tools and processes within institutions and academic programs. Regarding, the use of AI in the preparation phase of accreditation reviews, the policy states that AI-assisted tools and processes may be used by ABET accredited programs to (a) gather and summarize information in preparation for an ABET accreditation review, (b) support collection, analysis and evaluation of assessment data to facilitate the continuous improvement process, and (c) assist in the development of support materials. But all data and materials presented by programs and institutions for ABET accreditation review must be verified by qualified personnel for accuracy. And, AI must not replace human judgement in the continuous improvement process.
